The rapper has just confirmed that he has left record company Def Jam – a residency from which Jay-Z released his biggest hits and during which he went from artists to president and back to artist again.

Through the website Rap Radar, Jay-Z thanked executives for what he called “a unique and fulfilling experience” at the label.

Jay-Z signed an all-encompassing deal with Live Nation last year which includes touring, publishing and albums.

At the time of the signing, the rapper still owed Def Jam an album, but representatives for Jay-Z had no comment regarding the obligation.

Jay-Z said to Rap Radar in an exclusive interview:

“I can honestly say, working with Doug Morris and LA Reid has been a unique and fulfilling experience and I respect them immensely. I’ve been in the family for almost my entire career. Doug and I spoke directly and had one of the most unique ‘negotiations’ ever. Doug won the toss but, we both won in the end. I think him for allowing me to be a completely independent artist. Not every artist can say they own or are given the opportunity to own all of their music.”

Wonder why he would want to leave all of that for Live Nation….
