Jackson Gets to Keep Stuff
Michael Jackson has gotten his way in the quest to pull all of his precious belongings – including one sparkly white glove and some MTV VMA Awards – out of the Julien Auctions. The auction had been scheduled for next week, but was cancelled as Michael Jackson has sold out enough shows in London to make a garage sale unnecessary.
Darren Julien, the auctioneer, informed Reuters that an agreement had been reached between the auction house and Jackson, who had been suing for the return of his possessions. Assuming by agreement he means settlement, one has to wonder how much Jackson shelled out to keep his own stuff.
Though the auction won’t be happening, the public exhibit of the some 1,400 items will continue until April 25 in Beverly Hills. All of the items will be returned to Jackson once the exhibition is over. Jackson’s spokesperson Tohme R. Tohme issued a statement on Jackson’s behalf, claiming that both groups were happy with the agreement that “allows Michael Jackson to retain ownership of the Collection of Michael Jackson.”
Julien is not giving up how much he was awarded, saying only, “We are very happy. We are happy because he is happy.”
According to Jackson’s Tohme-issued statement, the reason for withdrawing from the auction actually had something to do with sharing and enjoying the collection with “Jackson’s fans for many years to come,” rather than putting it in the hands of private collectors. If you’re a Jackson fan, please let me know just how much enjoyment you are receiving from a white glove being in Jackson’s closet rather than some white dude banker’s closet.
