Miley/Disney Cashes in at the Box Office
Apparently little girls are still willing and able to drag their moms to the box office to obtain any kind of ticket that is selling the Hannah Montana brand – the Disney movie Hannah Montana: The Movie scored in a major way this weekend, selling $34 million’s worth of tickets. The movie, obviously, is based on the Disney Channel series about Miley Cyrus’ double life as pop star Hannah Montana.
The money that the movie pulled in on Friday – $17.3 million – is the biggest sum any G-rated live-action movie has ever made on an opening day.
The audience was mostly made up of girls 12 years old and younger, but the Disney motion-picture group president Mark Zoradi is insisting that Miley’s teenage audience, who may be beginning to outgrow the show, have instead stuck with her. The movie’s audience reflected this slightly, with a fairly solid showing from young teens.
At only 16 years old herself, Miley Cyrus is already a viable commodity for movie makers – her previous big screen effort Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert cashed in $31.1 during its debut, and the animated comedy that featured Cyrus, Bolt, opened to the tune of $26.2 million and eventually made $100 million.
With this sort of success at such an early age, it seems inevitable that Cyrus would be the sort of teenager who believes herself to have the God given privilege of meeting whatever band she wants, even Radiohead.
