Singer Eartha Kitt Dies
Earth Kitt passed away December 25 in Connecticut. The 81-year-old singer and former Broadway star was recently treated at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital for colon cancer, which ultimately caused her death.
Kitt’s career as a dancer and singer lasted through six decades – she was the winner of two Emmys, and garnered her share of Tony and Grammy nominations (and remains one of the few to be nominated for such differing awards). She began as a dancer with the Katherine Dunham troupe, and worked her way into singing and dancing in films. She famously played Catwoman in the Batman series from 1967-68, and earned a Tony nod for her role in the 1978 Broadway musical Timbuktu.
Close friend Andrew Freedman confirmed that Kitt had passed away on Christmas.
Kitt was born on January 17, 1927 in North, South Carolina. She was known musically for her (self-proclaimed) “kitten purr” of a voice (heard on the 1963 track “Santa Baby”). Orson Welles, with whom Kitt worked filming Dr. Faustus, once called Kitt “the most exciting woman in the world.” Kitt stayed active up until recent years, publishing a fitness book titled Rejuvinate in 2001, and playing a Broadway part in the revival of Nine in October of 2003.
