Legion Of Musicians Launch White Space Fight Back

Monday, October 27th, 2008

More than 100 artists and bands have united as one voice and written to the FCC in order to express their fears and concerns in regards to a vote that the FCC will be making on November 4th which will decide whether technology companies will be allowed to produce wireless devices that use the same radio spectrum as wireless microphones.

The artists worry that the new devices will interfere with the wireless microphones used on stage. Their concerns are well placed as the interference could cause a very annoying high pitched screeching sound which I don’t think they nor their fans would enjoy during live performances.

The list of musicians includes :

  1. The Eagles
  2. The Dixie Chicks
  3. Guns N Roses
  4. Jurassic 5
  5. Maroon 5
  6. Megadeth
  7. Morrissey
  8. Stone Temple Pilots
  9. Clay Walker
  10. Weezer

The letter goes into the vast depths of what artists could have to go through if the vote is passed :

“The thought of having to debate each night which band member gets to have the one wireless microphone that might be available in a given market on a given night is not a scenario we want to face, nor is it one that benefits the concert-going public.”

The legion of concerned voices are strongly requesting that at least 8 channels be made available exclusively to wireless microphones.

I’m sitting on the fence on this one though. Musicians and sound technicians must protect the delivery of sound to the audience - while technology must evolve and “white space” devices are the future.

Wireless microphones will have to evolve to prevent interference. Its a technological challenge that will have to be met.

Lily Allen Set To Ruffle Feathers With ‘Everyone’s At It’

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Lily Allen is clearly on it. Kate Moss is on it and not so long ago it couldn’t have been anymore obvious that Britney Spears was on it.

The constantly controversial star has released a short video which is to accompany the promotion of her new single Everyone’s At It.

The video, viewable below, contains images of Kate Moss, Britney Spears, The current President of the United States - George Bush and Amy Winehouse in a series of images surrounding drug-taking, celebrities and news headlines.

The insinuations made in the video will definitely raise the blood temperature of people included in it - or it could land the singer in some legal trouble. It is pretty much defamation of character as well as slander.

This is set to be the first single for Lily’s new album It’s Not Me, Its You which is out in February next year.

Let me know what you think of the song snippet and the contents of the video.

Artists Jumping Into The iPhone App Store

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Pink has joined an already growing list of musicians who are creating applications for the iPhone in order to market their tunes to the masses.

You can download the app from the iPhone App Store now and get a preview of each track of her new album, Funhouse, as well as photos and news of the rock chick herself. The album is due to be released on 28th October.

You can also browse her entire discography which will include links to buy all Pinks songs and albums.

The reach of the iPhone has been very dramatic since its 3G version was released and moves like these by artists show just how important Music labels believe the mobile market to be. The iPhones integration with iTunes makes it all the easier to push album sales which is something that Nokia is nervously watching closely.

Nokia released their own music service recently in order to compete with Apples iTunes store but after an initial push I am yet to here anything positive about the move.

Snow Patrol, Fall Out Boy and Nine Inch Nails have also been developing applications for the iPhone in order to promote their latest albums.

Gunned Down Dr. Pepper Smelling Of Roses

Friday, October 24th, 2008

The makers of Dr.Pepper, the marmite of soft drinks - you’ll either love it or hate it, are to stand by their promise of giving every American a free can of the soft drink now that Guns N Roses are releasing Chinese Democracy.

The company made the promise earlier in the year, at a time when nearly everyone was convinced that Guns N Roses were just going to continue to string us along with their promises and hints of a new album.

Now that Chinese Democracy is finally going to hit the shelves next month Dr.Pepper/Seven Up Inc have been caught and publicly called out to payout on their promise. It’ll be an extremely costly promise if it pays out in full.

The simple fact of the matter is that only a small proportion of Americans are going to actually jump through the hoops to get a free can of Dr.Pepper - which will leave the company with two things :

  1. Massive positive PR and cheap marketing for the overall cost
  2. An association with the new Guns N Roses album

In order to claim your free can you must :

  1. Signup on the Dr Pepper website (www.drpepper.com) on November 23rd (Chinese Democracy release date)
  2. Register for a coupon
  3. Take the coupon to your nearest Dr.Pepper selling store

The coupon offer will only be available for 24 hours and you’ll have until February 2009 to use it. Of course, giving up your email address while signing up for the coupon will mean that you are subjecting yourself to any and all advertising that Dr.Pepper wishes to send you in the future.

Jack White Pulls Out Of MTV Music Awards

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

The move has left MTV and James Bond film chiefs reeling Jack White, The Raconteurs and White Stripes frontman, has pulled out of the MTV Europe Music Awards at the start of November due to a slipped disc - in his neck.

The nasty injury occurred last month while White was touring with his side project band The Raconteurs.

A source close to the rocker had this to say:

“Jack’s still in a lot of pain. He hoped it would have cleared by now but the injury is refusing to heal. MTV are disappointed, as are Bond film chiefs. No one knows when he’ll be fit enough to travel again.”

Doctors have advised Jack not to travel in his current condition and that means all James Bond promotional activities involving the White Stripes man and Alicia Keys have been thrown into disarray. The couple were set to hit the stage at the MTV show for the first live performance of Another Way to Die - the theme tune to the latest Bond film Quantum Of Solace.

Catch the Quantum Of Solace theme tune below…

Girls Aloud: Nadine Coyle Buying LA Hotel

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Being a world renowned female Pop star has more benefits than just living the glitz lifestyle. It also allows you to setup a nice pension for when your chest doesn’t sit as high as it used to or your legs are showing some signs of ’stretching’.

Nearly all stars are given good money management classes these days - except for TLC - who were hung out to dry without 2 dimes to rub together - funny but true.

Girls Aloud singer, and fellow country mate of mine, Nadine Coyle has apparently been listening attentively in her “Best Places To Buy Right Now” classes by snapping up a run-down hotel in Los Angeles.

The star has plans to renovate the site into a 50’s theme hotel and bar which will be the first in a line of ’boutique’ hotels she wishes to own.

It has been reported in many areas that Coyle has pumped in all of her own money on the venture but I find this very hard to believe.

The management structure needed to run the hotel as well as two other bars in the LA area would be too much for a constantly touring musician. 99% of the time a dedicated businessman or team approach artists with ways to invest their money and I’m sure the same has occurred here.

Nadine, I’m sure, is being well advised no matter where the money is going.

Kings Of Leon: Only By The Night Review

Friday, October 17th, 2008

I have a friend who described The Kings Of Leon’s latest album as ‘different’ - but what does he know about music?

Only By The Night has to be one of the 00’s (noughties, as in 2000 - 2009) greatest albums - no exaggeration. It has been majestically written and produced by a band that constantly steps up to the plate to deliver quality records.

I am, admittedly, a huge fan - but that doesn’t add anything to my critique.

The first single from the album, Sex On Fire, really sets the tone for what you can expect from the other tracks e.g. energy, some times dark and altogether great, catchy music.

The album continues with Use Somebody which could easily be the next single.

It was supposed that the bands 2007 release Because Of The Times would see it at the peak of its powers - but I can’t help but feel that they are just starting to get into their groove now with Only By The Night.

This band can be as big as they want to be and it will only be the “settling down” mentality that will see it dwindle.

Key tracks:

  • Absolutely all of them

Track Listing:

  1. Closer
  2. Crawl
  3. Sex On Fire
  4. Use Somebody
  5. Manhattan
  6. Revelry
  7. Seventeen
  8. Notion
  9. I Want You
  10. Be Somebody
  11. Cold Desert

Eminem Could Be Back Before Christmas

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Speaking during an interview on Shade 45 Radio show Eminem confirmed that he is definitely coming back to rap and has most of an album in place.

The new record will be called “Relapse“.

No release date was mentioned in the interview but 50 Cent dropped a hint that it may drop before his next album “Before I Self Destruct” which is due to hit the shelves on 9th December.

Eminem’s previous studio album, Encore, came 4 years ago in 2004 and was followed up a year later with - what was supposed to be his last release - a greatest hits record called “Curtain Call: The Hits“.

The news about the new album came as the 8 mile star was launching his book “The Way I Am“.

There is a video doing the rounds on YouTube which indicates that could be one of the songs of Eminems new album. You can catch it below. Be warned that it could just be a freestyle.

Radiohead: ‘In Rainbows’ Download - A Financial Success

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

It was the marketing and sales tactic that is still sending ripples through the music industry one year on and now someone close to the business side of the band is revealing some proper details about just how successful the move was.

Until now the band have been very tight lipped about the move to offer their latest album ‘In Rainbows‘ for whatever price avid fans wanted to pay for it.

It was the move that everyone was shocked, relieved, excited and pretty much over the moon with at the time. No other band with the commercial success that Radiohead brings to the table has even dared to replicate the stunt - which is either an indication as to the failure of the endeavour OR just how well the details have been contained.

According to details from Music Ally, Jane Dyball (Head of Business Affairs at Warner Chappell) has revealed that the income from the downloads on the ‘pay-what-you-like’ website ‘dwarfed’ previous digital publishing income and totalled more than all the income from the bands previous album ‘Hail To The Thief’.

Physical sales of the album were available 3 months after downloading began and more than 100,000 boxsets were and continue to be sold. All avenues, including physical and digital sales, have totalled more than 3 million purchases on ‘In Rainbows‘.

Dyball noted that at all times during the download experiment both members of the band and the sales team were monitoring the average income per album. They had their finger on the pulse the whole time and were ready to pull the website if the figures dropped to low.

They realised that the most income would come during the first few weeks as this would be when the hardcore fans - the ones who would actually pay to support the band - would be downloading. They expected the income to slowly tail off as the freeloaders jumped onboard.

The most popular download method was through BitTorrent. This isn’t exactly surprising as it is the most efficient method of downloading large files. From a business stand point - If BitTorrent downloads were not available I am nearly 100% positive that the experiment would not have been as successful. This is due to the expense of bandwidth.

The more people downloading from BitTorrent - the less expensive each download is and hence higher returns.

Even though the effort was clearly a resounding success no one from the band has revealed any intentions to do it all over again.
