The Verve End Glastonbury On A High

The VerveEmily Eavis, daughter of event organiser Michael Eavis, asked The Verve to head Glastonbury this year against the wishes of her father - he thought they wouldn’t be as good as Keane. Never could a man be any more wrong.

The Verve took to the stage in rapturous applause and followed it up with a set list to prove that they were not only MILES better than Keane, but a band fit to headline any Rock ‘N Roll festival.

During the gig the crowd were in the bands hands - singing, chanting, reliving all the moments they grew up listening to the likes of Bitter Sweet Symphony, Drugs Don’t Work and Sonnet. These are the songs that a generation of Glastonbury goers lived on - and it showed. The crowds support shone through.

It makes me quite sad that anyone would even attempt to compare Keane with The Verve. The bands are on two completely different planets. The Verve - Earth and Keane - Pluto or somewhere further out. I wouldn’t classify Keane as a Rock ‘N Roll band - more Pop with Guitars - a slightly more respected Busted.

What do you think? The Verve or Keane?

Here is the set list The Verve played last night:

  1. This Is Music
  2. Sonnet
  3. Space And Time
  4. Sit And Wonder
  5. History
  6. Life’s An Ocean
  7. Velvet Morning
  8. Rolling People
  9. Drugs Don’t Work
  10. Lucky Man
  11. Bitter Sweet Symphony
  12. Love Is Noise

Er, Keane famously don’t have a guitar in their set-up. More importantly, I don’t think they’re that different from the Verve in a slot like this - similarly anthemic melodic indie that a crowd can gurn along to. Verve’s ‘rockier’ songs are just a drudge and it was only the five poppy songs and the goodwill of the glasto crowd that got them through their rather turgid set last night. They looked tired and frankly rather out of touch in 2008, leather or no leather, guitars or no guitars.

Keane are not even in the same category IMHO.

The Verve hands down whip the choir boys in music, style, bravado. I can’t see any crowd who has paid so much to get into Glastonbury give a crap band ‘goodwill’. If you are crap - they hound you out.

The verve had the crowd in their hand!

Proving once again that italians really are fascists! Roberto are you disabled? ‘Cause you are f^^^^ing deaf mate - that was one of the best closing sets that festival has seen - their rock and roll songs were the high point - This Is Music - hardly turgid - bittersweet symphony - a puppy song??? yeh right - I’d like to hear one of yours - perhaps there’s an italian band who can do better - i sincerely doubt it. The verve are one of the most important bands of the last twenty years and put them alongside any other band on the planet and they can easily hold their own. U=IDIOT

Bit strong B.

But right on with the verve.

Thats 2 votes for The Verve against 1 for Keane.

Who else has an opinion?

Roberto - you’re entitled to your opinion mate but I suspect you’re in the minority - slightly confuised as to why you bothered to watch them as it’s obvious you’re not a fan.

Anyway, I thought The Verve were brilliant. Richard Ashcroft’s voice is just awesome - the guy didn’t miss a note, and he’s lost none of his swagger. Can’t wait for the new album if ‘Love is noise’ is anything to go by.

That’s 3 for The Verve…

Good man ML.

Roberto - you are going to have to get your posé over here to back you up.

The Verve are walking away with this…

Well said ML, you are a wise man. There are plenty of bands out there that deserve a bash, but the Verve aren’t one of them. Roberto, hang your head in shame, for you are an absolute disgrace. The Verve are f*cking legend, and Richard Ashcroft is a great singer. I find it embarrassing that someone like Jay-Z was even in this country, let alone top of the bill. Zero talent, zero f*cking anything.
