Kings Of Leon: Only By The Night Review

Friday, October 17th, 2008

I have a friend who described The Kings Of Leon’s latest album as ‘different’ - but what does he know about music?

Only By The Night has to be one of the 00’s (noughties, as in 2000 - 2009) greatest albums - no exaggeration. It has been majestically written and produced by a band that constantly steps up to the plate to deliver quality records.

I am, admittedly, a huge fan - but that doesn’t add anything to my critique.

The first single from the album, Sex On Fire, really sets the tone for what you can expect from the other tracks e.g. energy, some times dark and altogether great, catchy music.

The album continues with Use Somebody which could easily be the next single.

It was supposed that the bands 2007 release Because Of The Times would see it at the peak of its powers - but I can’t help but feel that they are just starting to get into their groove now with Only By The Night.

This band can be as big as they want to be and it will only be the “settling down” mentality that will see it dwindle.

Key tracks:

  • Absolutely all of them

Track Listing:

  1. Closer
  2. Crawl
  3. Sex On Fire
  4. Use Somebody
  5. Manhattan
  6. Revelry
  7. Seventeen
  8. Notion
  9. I Want You
  10. Be Somebody
  11. Cold Desert

Kings Of Leon: Sex On Fire Video Released

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

The super great Kings Of Leon have released the video for the first single from their new album (Only By The Night) - Sex On Fire.

The song is epic and a brilliant continuance from the bands previous work. Don’t get worried by the songs title - the video is very mild and is definitely SFW (suitable for work) i.e You wont see any nudity - anywhere.

The full album (Only By The Night) is to be released next month (Kings Of Leon Reveal New Album Tracklisting) and is sure to sell like their recent ticket sales. Fast.

The bands appearance at Oxegen in Ireland was met with a rapturous welcome recently and when they announced shows in both Dublin and Belfast - the tickets sold out in minutes.

There are a lot of disappointed fans, who missed out on tickets, making their feelings known on the bands website - in a vain hope that some new shows will be added.

I also missed out on a ticket and maybe forced to pay a heft price to get one - elsewhere. Caleb, Jared, Matthew and Nathan - please forward my ticket and “press” pass for the Belfast show to my home address. Thanks.

Let me know what you think of the video, below (or on YouTube), in the comments:

Kings Of Leon Reveal New Album Tracklisting

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Kings Of Leon have revealed the final tracklisting to their new album entitled “Only by the Night”.

The new album, their fourth studio record, has 11 tracks and is due for release on 22nd September. The full track-listing to “Only By The Night” is:

  1. ‘Closer’
  2. ‘Crawl’
  3. ‘Sex On Fire’
  4. ‘Use Somebody’
  5. ‘Manhattan’
  6. ‘Revelry’
  7. ‘Seventeen’
  8. ‘Notion’
  9. ‘I Want You’
  10. ‘Be Somebody’
  11. ‘Cold Desert’

The first single planned for release is “Sex on Fire”, due out on 15th September, in just enough time to wet our appetites for the full album release a week later.

The band admits though that the unusual title for the first single came about in rather a different way. In an interview with NME this week, Kings of Leon front man, Caleb Followill is quoted as saying :

“I just had this melody and I didn’t know what to say, and one day I just sang this sex is on fire’ and I laughed and the other guys are like ‘what are you laughing at?’. I thought it was terrible, but they were like ‘It’s good, it’s got a hook’. I was like ‘Fuck off!’ but I ended up writing it. There’s an element of sex that’s expected in our songs, so I tried to wrap it all up in one song.”

You can listen to the new single on YouTube here.

Kings of Leon are also playing a full UK Arena Tour later this year - which we reported mid-July : Kings Of Leon Are Going To Be Kicking It In The UK
