Unauthorized Drake Album Hits iTunes
It seems an album Drake hasn’t released is up for sale on iTunes: “The Girls Love Drake”, featuring tracks from the mixtape “So Far Gone”, appeared in the digital music store May 28.
It was put there by a label by the name of Canadian Money Entertainment and distributor Independent Online Distribution Alliance (IODA).
The album was also made available on Rhapsody and Amazon.
In an exclusive report, Billboard says that Drake and his people ae still in the process of clearing music from “So Far Gone” for album sale, and that they did not authorize the release.
The album is selling relatively well whether it is an authentic release or not – if it counted as a Drake album, it would have been No. 101 on the Billboard 200, No. 16 on the Digital Albums chart, and No. 1 on the Heatseekers list.
This illicit release also helped the single “Best I Ever Had” jump from No. 60 to 18 on the Billboard 200, and “Every Girl” subsequently went from No. 60 to 18.
Not that that excuses this inexplicable album release. Drake’s management promptly sent a cease-and-desist notice to iTunes, which in turn promptly removed the unauthorized album.
It’s still available on Rhapsody and Amazon as this is being typed up – in fact, I may be listening to it right now….
The rapper is of course planning on filing suit against the label, which according to Drake is not affiliated with him or Young Money, his label affiliate (though he remains at the center of a major label bidding war and seems close to signing with Universal Motown).
