Lawyer For Phil Spector Seeks Lesser Sentence
Documents filed by Phil Spector’s lawyer on Wednesday maintain that the former producer is innocent and not responsible for the death of actress Lana Clarkson, though Spector was convicted of her murder on April 13 at the end of a second trial.
Attorney Doron Weinberg asked in the memorandum to the sentencing judge that Spector be sentenced to 18 years to life in prison.
It was also requested in the document that the extended sentencing for use of a gun be trimmed to three years, rather than the four requested by the prosecution.
A minimum sentence for just the murder conviction is fifteen years to life.
The legendary 69-year-old Wall of Sound producer will be sentenced on Friday, though Weinberg says Spector plans on appealing this conviction.
There were no eyewitnesses to the shooting, and it seems Spector will maintain his innocence no matter how many trials he has to sit through.
As part of Weinberg’s argument for a lesser sentence, the lawyer mentioned in the memorandum that during a private conference with the judge over jury instructions regarding the verdict, prosecutors had argued “that the facts proven at trial could support the conclusion that the death of Lana Clarkson resulted from an accidental discharge of the weapon during a misdemeanor brandishing.”
Because of this suggestion, Weinberg says, the additional charge for gun usage should be reduced.
