Lil Wayne Sues Producer
Lil Wayne seems to spend plenty of time in courtrooms; currently the rapper is suing the producer of one of his songs for allegedly sampling another song without permission.
Another lawsuit, filed last year, accused Lil Wayne of copyright infringement.
The lawsuit claimed the rapper had failed to get permission to sample Karma-Ann Swanepoel’s song “Once” for his song “I Feel Like Dying.”
Lil Wayne’s rappers in turn filed another lawsuit last week, claiming that since Rebel Rock Productions, Inc. produced the song “I Feel Like Dying,” the Coconut Creek, Florida company is responsible for obtaining licensing agreements.
The Associated Press reports that the company neither has a lawyer listed on any court records, the company’s listed telephone number has been disconnected.
“I Feel Like Dying” is not a song on the album ‘Tha Carter III’, but Wayne was ordered to turn over his financial records for the album to Urband & Lazar Music Publishing, the company that published “Once.”
The judge ordered that the song and album were linked because the rapper used the song during performances to promote the album – as any artist would do!
Lil Wayne allowed fans to download the track for free from his website, so then apparently it is still copyright infringement if you don’t make any money directly from the product.
Not that I’m down on poor Karma-Ann for not wanting big mean rappers to steal her song that no one would have ever otherwise known about.
