2nd Best Coachella Year Ever

This year’s Coachella begs the question, “What recession?”

The Indio, California festival had the second biggest year in ticket sales in its history this year, with an attendance of about 160,000 – according to producer Paul Tollett, president of Goldenvoice, which is a division of AEG Live.

Tollett believes this year’s lineup, which included Paul McCartney, Leonard Cohen, the Killers, the Cure, and My Bloody Valentine, was what put this year’s Coachella over that line.

There was a layaway plan designed for ticket buyers who didn’t have the money stashed away to buy their tickets outright, but only about 18% of ticket holders felt they needed this option.

Tollett told Billboard: “The last few weeks ticket counts really skyrocketed. When people first see the poster they recognize some of the band names, but as we start getting closer to the show, these bands start to become better known.”

If you say so.

Did he forget about all of the new editions to the lineup after Amy Winehouse realized there was no way she was going to be able to get a performance visa for Coachella?

This year’s festival was beat out by itself only once, in 2007, when the attendance was 186,636. That festival made $16.3 million.
