Remaining Beatles Reunite
The remaining living Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, got together for a performance at the David Lynch Foundation’s Transcendental Meditation benefit this past Saturday, April 4 in New York.
Starr actually joined McCartney for his show’s finale of three songs. The two began their half-Beatles reunion with “A Little Help From My Friends,” and ended with a rendition of “I Saw Her Standing There” that included all of the night’s performers, including Eddie Vedder, Donovan, Sheryl Crow, Ben Harper, Moby and Mike Love of the Beach Boys. (This of course received a standing ovation.)
The Lynch Foundation is to use the benefits from the show for one million at risk youths via meditation. The aptly titled and sold-out “Change Begins Within” show is the first time the two Beatles have taken the stage together since the Concert for George in London during 2002 on the anniversary of Harrison’s death.
Though it probably made plenty of ex-flower children bank tellers nostalgic to see the two onstage, it isn’t exactly like a Lennon-McCarthy reunion was taking place. Ringo was usually the Beatle who could get past differences and work with the other ex-members of the band, and I love Ringo but as a drummer he wasn’t exactly a heavy hitter in the development of the Beatles’ historic catalog.
After the performance of their final song, both McCartney and Starr hugged every musician onstage before jokingly trying to beat the other out for the center stage spotlight, and the crowd cheered mercilessly until everyone had vacated the stage.
