Lucky Dube’s Murderers Sentenced

After Lucky Dube, 43, was killed in a bungled carjacking in October 2007, three men have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the South African reggae star’s murder, according to the SAPA news agency.

Dube recorded over twenty full length albums and has shared venues with the likes of Peter Gabriel, Sting, and Sinead O’Connor. He won more than twenty awards both in his South African homeland and internationally. In 1984 Lucky Dube released his first album, Rastas Never Die, which was promptly banned by South Africa’s apartheid government.

The trio of murderers also each received fifteen years sentences for the attempted robbery of Dube’s car. Sifiso Mhlanga, Julius Gxowa, and Mbuti Mabe were all found guilty earlier this week.

South Africa has one of the highest rates of violence and crime in the world, and is a country subject to numerous murders, rapes, and car jackings.

It’s a sad way to go out, and it’s certainly not the kind of thing you expect to happen to any kind of celebrity, but it just goes to show that… they’re just like us.
