The reaction is officially split over the release of the battered Rihanna photo: many think that the photo could be an embarrassment for the woman pictured; others say it could be a good idea that little girls get to see it.

An advocated for battered women, Susan Murphy-Milano told the AP that she does hope young women see it and wonder what else could happen to the singer. The president of the National Organization for Women told them something similar: “If it could happen to Rihanna, it could happen to anyone.

And it happens a lot – the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control report about 4.8 million cases of domestic violence against women, and 2.9 million against men every year. Both of the women mentioned above hope that the picture of a battered Rihanna brings a new awareness to the issue of domestic abuse.

The police are still investigating how the photo was leaked to TMZ – and now they are considering charging TMZ with felony conspiracy.

Rihanna had been silent until yesterday, the singer’s birthday, when she released a statement through Rubenstein Associates.

It said, “At the request of the authorities, Rihanna is not commenting about the incident involving Chris Brown. She wants to assure her fans that she remains strong, is doing well, and deeply appreciates the outpouring of support she has received during this difficult time.

Rihanna cancelled her birthday party, which was to be held in New York.
