Etta James on Hating Beyonce
Yesterday morning it came across the wire that Etta James was smoking mad about Beyoncé singing “her song” during one of the President’s inaugural balls.
An audio clip from a concert James performed last week had surfaced and made its rounds on the Internet on Thursday, and in it the 71-year-old said she wanted to “whip” Beyonce for having the audacity to sing “At Last” at the ball.
Her words were, “The great Beyonce…I can’t stand Beyonce. She has no business up there, singing up where on a big ol’ presidential day, gonna be singing my song that I’ve been singing forever.”
To add insult to injury, it was Beyonce who had played James in the movie Cadillac Records, released last year. She also sang “At Last” during the movie.
After this news was released, late afternoon yesterday James made it known that she was, um, just joking about the whole hating Beyonce thing.
James told the New York Daily News that she “didn’t really mean anything” by what she said during the audio clip. She further elaborated, “Even as a little child, I’ve always had that comedian kind of attitude…. That’s probably what went into it.”
Probably?
It’s okay to hate Beyonce, Miss James.
Even if it’s just because no one asked you to sing during the presidential ceremonies.
