Back to Work for Jennifer Hudson

The former American Idol contestant who once made Simon Cowell eat his words gave another flawless performance, singing the national anthem at the Superbowl yesterday in Tampa, Florida. It was her first public appearance, much anticipated since the murders of her family members in Chicago (which she has still not spoken about in public).

Faith Hill, who sang “America the Beautiful” at the game, told attendees at an NFL news conference,

She is a strong girl, a girl of faith. I believe to come and perform the national anthem, which is this country’s favorite song, at a time that our country is stepping up and moving forward for future generations. I think it’s just the perfect choice.

Hill meant that Hudson did well to decide to use the Superbowl as her back-to-work performance. But for Hudson, who lost her mother, brother, and nephew all at the same time, the performance seemed more personal. She seemed to be bracing herself as she began, and completely relieved once it was all over.

Hudson is also going to perform at the Grammy Awards, and her new video for “If This Isn’t Love” – recently shot – is to debut next week.
