Now That’s What I Call Music! To Launch TV Show

It may be a mystery as to how those Now That’s What I Call Music! discs actually make any money, since all of the hit songs they feature can easily be replaced by any list of other subpar pop tunes. Some songs make me want to buy it but then others make me run away from it, the remaining songs make me look over my shoulder to make sure that no one sees me holding it.

Producer Simon Fuller (the man behind such classics as American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance) and his production company 19 Entertainment are looking into creating a show that has something to do with the Now That’s What I Call Music! series. The show is in its early stages (doesn’t have a name, etc.), but Fuller has the exclusive rights to negotiate a TV show based on the property. He says:

This show will be nothing like American Idol and definitely won’t be a spinoff. It will be a new take on music programming.”

Oh.

The show will somehow feature the acts that make it onto the discs, such as Jay-Z and Britney Spears, and will be “designed to take the brand Now and bring it to a broader level” (says CEO of the Now series, Bob Mercer). Whatever that means.

Mercer is under the impression that people purchase the Now That’s What I Call Music! compilations in order to understand what is going on in music today, and wants to develop the trust people put into the brand into a television show.

Bloggers everywhere are sharpening their claws in anticipation of the show.

Mercer wants the show to have its own pop chart, so that viewers can be involved, and the show may also feature crinkled but constant figures such as Madonna or the Rolling Stones as well as up-and-coming newly-signed/unsigned acts. Potential performers will be able to upload audition videos to the show’s website.

This sounds like it will be really boring.

Hope further details make it a bit better.
