Musical Golden Globes go to Springsteen, Rahman

Last night the musical Golden Globes were handed out to Bruce Springsteen for the title track from the movie The Wrestler, which won best song, and to A.R. Rahman for the score of Slumdog Millionaire, awarded the best original score.

The Slumdog Millionaire score brought Rahman his first Golden Globe, as well as his first nomination, though the film composer has long been on the Bollywood scene, and his work has already garnered four Silver Lotus Awards, as well as nine Filmfare Awards. He has done scores for the films Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India.

Springsteen won his first Golden Globe in 1994 for the song “Streets of Philadelphia,” from the movie Philadelphia (that year, the same song also won an Oscar for best song). The song “The Wrestler” gave Springsteen his second Golden Globe, and was released just last month in digital form, and will also be a part of Springsteen’s upcoming album, Working on a Dream. The album comes out January 27.

If you didn’t know it, Golden Globes are awarded based on decisions made by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Some consider this awards show a precursor to the Academy Awards, whose nominations will be revealed on January 22.
