John Lennon Advocates for the Poor
Almost thirty years after Lennon’s early death, he is about to appear in a charity advertisement advocating technology for the underprivileged. Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono granted permission to use Lennon’s voice and image to the One Laptop Per Child Foundation, an organization that works to give computers to impoverished children around the globe.
The One Laptop Per Child Foundation is a project by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who in turn works to supply solar powered machines to poor populations around the world.
In the advertistment, which will be given air time as a donation from U.S. cable stations, Lennon says:
“Imagine every child no matter where in the world they were could access a universe of knowledge. They would have a change to learn, to dream, to achieve anything they want. I tried to do it through my music, but now you can do it in a very different way.”
Lennon’s voice and image are both digitally crafted, which is a bit creepy, even if it is for a good cause. Or a seemingly good cause, as long as those impoverished children don’t pick up on Nigerian scams (419) and start robbing my grandmother.
