It’s Burke vs. Buckley

Though Alexandra Burke won the U.K.’s X Factor a mere four days ago, her version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” has already broken records – the track became the fastest-selling download in the history of downloads, selling 80,000 copies since its release at midnight Saturday.

The most recent fastest-selling download was 2006 X Factor winner Leona Lewis’ “Run,” which sold 69,244 files in two days. (At 23, Lewis, the show’s most successful singer to date, recently signed a contract for £5 million.)

But the indomitable Simon Cowell promised the public a “more versatile” star in Burke, and is already shopping for the perfect song writers for his shiny new underling.

Alexandra Burke’sHallelujah” appeared at #30 on the U.K. charts yesterday, and will likely be the Christmas Number One (so far based on download sales alone). Jeff Buckley fans are gathering in efforts to get his 1994 version of the song to the Number One position – there is a Facebook group dedicated to the feat with more than 35,000 members.

In other X Factor news, according to a survey of British kids under the age of ten released today, Simon Cowell is currently the most famous person in the world – beating out the Queen of England (last year’s winner), Harry Potter, and God (who came in second this year).
