Another Strokes Side Project
The Strokes’ bassist Nikolai Fraiture is setting up his own sideshow project with his band Nickel Eye (get it?!) , but even more importantly, The Strokes are scheduled to start making new music next February.
The bassist isn’t worried about the Strokes having been off the radar for two years, telling Billboard.com: “We’re all on the same page”. He’s confident that any side projects the guys have going on will help them all be “fresh” again for their new album.
Fraiture’s band, who are not the Strokes, release their album The Time of the Assassins on January 27th. The album is a bit of a concept stemming from a period when Fraiture dropped out of New York’s Hunter College. Fraiture went on a cross-country trek afterward, from which images emerge in the band’s lyrics. Musical influences include a non-Strokes sound base: Leonard Cohen, the Kinks, Neil Young, and Frank Black.
The Time of the Assassins was recorded with the band South at South Studios in London, and guest appearances on the album are made by Regina Spektor and Nick Zinner, guitarist of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Nickel Eye is going to open a few shows for the Raveonettes next month, with more dates to be announced.
