Britney Back on Top
Perhaps unsurprisingly (after sweeping the VMAs and relentlessly pelting the public with her “comeback documentary” in constant rotation on MTV), Britney Spears’ new album moved 505,000 copies and debuted at the top spot on the Billboard 200 list.
That makes Spears – formerly shaved bald and strapped to a gurney or not – the only artist in the history of Nielsen SoundScan to have four different albums debut at gold status. (During sweeter, more innocent times, Spears achieved this feat with the albums Oops! I Did it Again (2000), Britney (2002), and In the Zone (2003))
When the new Billboard Hot 100 was released today, Spears garnered her first Top Ten debut with the title track to her new album, Circus entering at #3. The first single from the album – Womanizer – had once reached the #1 spot, and now resides at #10. (Having two singles in the Top Ten is another first for the seasoned performer.)
In other Billboard 200 news, last week’s #3 album, the dubiously-awaited Chinese Democracy slipped from the Top Ten this week to #18 (due to a 78% decrease in sales). Who’s to say things wouldn’t have turned out differently if Axl’s manager hadn’t just produced a comeback documentary that delved into his sad personal life?
