YouTube Partners For Music Downloads

In continuing attempts to monetize their costly asset, Google has moved to partner with iTunes, Amazon, EMI and Universal to peddle music to the video watching masses on YouTube.

The users will be able to click an icon on Youtube which will whisk them off to iTunes or Amazon.com to buy buy buy.

The icon only appears on videos for artists signed by EMI or Universal – but I had a hard time finding the magic button in a few short tests. You should be aware that user uploaded videos will not be covered by this. It is only on choice videos that EMI or Universal upload which is very restrictive from a monetary point of view.

This move doesn’t capitalise on the vast sums of Youtube users who embed songs in their videos which play over their antics. I’d have thought the best way to introduce this functionality was with song identification technology – but alas – no.

I’m not sure how successful this will be as people tend to draw towards services that are dedicated to their needs. That is why iTunes practically owns the market. It specialises.
