It’s A Rickrolling Disaster For MTV
So – everyone knows already : Rick Astley is up for an MTV award in the category of “Best Act Ever“.
The 80’s legend solo artist faces stiff competition against the likes of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Green Day, Tokio Hotel and U2.
The Song, which Astley has been voted in for, “Never Gonna Give You Up” has become an Internet hit over the past year and a half as pranksters trick others into listening to it on YouTube.
They’d lure you to the video with the promise of other content and only once you arrive at the site and the song starts playing do you realise that you have been “rickrolled“.
It is based on this that MTV have decided to add Rick to the nominees for the award. Richard Godfrey, Senior VP at MTV, had this to say :
“This surprise nomination truly demonstrates that the MTV Europe Music Awards is the most democratically selected awards show there is. Rick’s fans have obviously decided that he deserves recognition as a pop icon and no doubt they are determined to make sure he wins on the night.”
The song is used as a gag now for the simple reason that it is utter cheese. It is like the biggest block of Stilton Cheese ever – all wrapped up in bows and tassels.
For MTV to include it is to merely poke fun at the artist – not support him. If you were Rick – would you honestly accept the award if you won? You’d know that everyone there knew the only reason you won it was because it is all just a big joke.
How would you be able to stand there in front of them?
MTV awards are also renowned for their favouritism. Richard Godfrey’s comments above are a complete sham and further pushes just how fixed and stupid the MTV awards are becoming.
It is a ill-thought-out PR disaster for MTV.

And Tokio Hotel, deserves it better?
How about Madonna? And her ultra-commercial songs? Rhianna? O.K., U2 are good but they haven’t put out a good song in years. Green Day? Get real.
This was not that serious at start. People thought it was funny. But now IT’S SERIOUS. IT’S ON! Rick DESERVES this prize because the song is good. Yeah, the video is funny and cheesy, but the song ain’t bad at all and he deserves recognition for such a lasting hit. And mostly, he deserves the prize not because he is super great, but because his competition is utter commercial fabricated and put-in-the-spotlight trash. Compared to them, Rick really deserves the win.
You… cannot…. be…..serious!
Ofcourse Tokio Hotel don’t deserve it but at least they are recent.
People thought it was funny because Rick was voted and he is the biggest joke in music at the moment.
The song is not good either! Are you drunk?
Wait – your making fun – right?
no one make fun or is drunk.
the hole online gamer com is voting for Rick Astley.
Haha!
The whole “online gamer com” is on drugs and playing never gonna give you up on repeat!!
Losers.
@Dakirah,
Seriously….. No one in any community is doing anything for Rick Astley. They are doing it for their own satisfaction.
Funny as I believe it to be – it aint right.
