I don't know if you've heard that live soundboard recording of Cyanide from earlier this month, but it's a bit closer to "The Day That Never Comes" than "My Apocalypse". It's not a bad song, just not great. So, out of the three songs I've heard from this album, "My Apocalypse" is DEFINITELY my favorite and I like it much, much more than the other two I've heard. "My Apocalypse" has the type of riffs I would expect from James. I know that people evolve as musicians but I think James' best riffs are found on "Master of Puppets" and "...And Justice For All". Of course, that's just personal opinion but the riffs on those two albums are definitely inspirational. "My Apocalypse" has some really awesome riffage. Kirk's solo is just... there. lol. I really stopped liking Kirk's soloing. His note choice just isn't all that great. Anywho... I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of the album, for sure. =) -Stephen Yeah, no kidding. THIS is what I expected to hear from Metallica reaching back into their roots! Although I think the drums are a bit repetitive and I still feel they're horribly mixed (the bass drum sounds too muffled and the snare hits need to be WAY punchier), this song is DEFINITELY a pleasure to hear! Lars throws in some long-awaited double bass. That classic Metallica gallop through the verses on guitar sounds nicely reincarnated in this day and age but my favorite parts of this song are the chorus and the bridge. VERY cool riffs! Man, this song and "The Day That Never Comes" are like night and day. If you listen close, you can hear that Rob isn't just following the guitars all the time and I personally dig that about a bassist. James' vocals sound more passionate on this song than I've heard from him in a very long time but I must say that I'm convinced Rick Rubin is overrated. I don't care what he did for Slayer back in the 80's or whoever else in metal. There are producers out there who could've done a HELL of a lot more to make this music sound much edgier. I know all of you Rick Rubin fanboys out there are going to come out of the woodwork and bash me but I don't give a crap. Pop in Phobia by Breaking Benjamin, This Godless Endeavor by Nevermore, Zero Order Phase by Jeff Loomis, or even check out www.myspace.com/tesseract to hear some EXCELLENT metal production! Get it straight before you have a go at me: I'm NOT bashing Metallica. I thought this song was EXCELLENT. Rick Rubin has left much to be desired for an audiophile such as myself who is used to much better production in metal. Just like some of you feel like Metallica's better days were almost 20 years ago, the same applies for your golden boy, Rick Rubin.
