McFly Play A Marketing Game With The Charts
Are you looking to surge straight to the front of the charts?
Are you willing to do anything to get there? Like, say, exploiting your fans?
Well then look no further, as McFly have the plan for you!
Instead of releasing one single, release three singles with identical songs but different “content” – i.e 3 different versions. This way your devoted fans will clobble over themselves to get “every little thing you” but buying the three versions.
This means that one fan has the potential of bringing you in 3 sales in one go. All you have to do is make the “content” compelling enough to warrant its purchase.
Now before you get all uptight and angry, ponder this : They have not broken any chart rules and have made the 3 singles available as a bundle for £4. Which is apparently a bargain – according to some highstreet retailers. The bundle still registers as 3 single sales – which is what is currently accounting for the bands rise through the charts.
This is exploiting your fans at its best. It is also demeaning the singles chart and infuriating other artists who didn’t think of the idea for themselves.
What do you think?
Is this a good marketing idea or a slime-y tactic by non-deserving band?
